Short answer: car battery drain in cold weather is mostly physics — a cold battery holds less usable charge, cold oil makes the engine harder to turn, and short winter trips never fully recharge what the starter took. Why cold weather drains a car battery

  • Winter loads pile on. Heated rear screen, blowers, headlights and wipers all draw power the moment you set off.

Is it the cold, or is something actually wrong?

Cold explains a lot, but not a battery that goes flat overnight while parked. That points to a parasitic drain — something staying awake when the car is locked (a stuck light, a dodgy aftermarket accessory, a module not going to sleep). The honest way to tell them apart: a battery that is simply weak in the cold will still turn the car after a good charge or a longer drive, whereas a parasitic drain flattens even a healthy, freshly charged battery.
